New HTML Editor: Now Included Inside Email Creator

When we first launched our new Email Creator earlier this year, we received a lot of enthusiastic feedback.  But some of you, especially the more advanced users and those who had gotten used to the old editor, said it lacked the option of HTML code editing alongside the drag ‘n’ drop functionality.  Well, no more.

The year’s coming to an end, but we haven’t stopped yet. We have a few more things in store for you, and one of them launches today.

Email Creator was meant to be easy – that’s why we decided to develop the drag ‘n’ drop technology. We made the HTML code available for editing with a separate tool, but we know some of you already got used to the combination of HTML and WYSIWYG editors in the old GetResponse editor.

The good news is, now you have both, so you can introduce extra code tweaks to a newsletter created in Email Creator.

Simply Click the Show HTML Editor link at the bottom of the drag ‘n’ drop editor and edit the code as much as you please.

When you open the HTML Editor, you see two switches:

One switch lets you choose a background for your code — black or white.

The other switch lets you choose to view only the HTML Editor, or a split screen that shows how your design looks as you edit.

Before you switch on the HTML Editor, there’s one important point to remember: once you use the HTML Editor to alter the code, you might not be able to use the drag ‘n’ drop screen to introduce further changes.

So the clever move might be to use the drag ‘n’ drop screen to get the basics in place.  Then use the HTML Editor for final tweaks.

So, what do you think? Let us know how it works for you!

Email Promos: Prepare your “Christmas Gift”

Are you ready with your Santa Emails? Some email marketers already posted their gift guides, but is it too early? To help you prepare for this year’s Christmas shopping fever, we’ve created a blog post series to guide you through each step and show you how to promote your business during this time in the year. To help you remember the advice, we used a “Christmas gift” theme. Let’s start with… preparing the contents.

In addition to being an email marketer, you’re a consumer. Aren’t you bored with overrated, generic subjects in your inbox every year? Such as:

Free shipping for ChristmasBest Christmas deals are hereHoliday gift guide, etc.

Take it a step further and engage your subscribers, starting with the subject! Are you familiar with gamification rules? Yes, email is a great place to play with them. Construct a subject line that makes every recipient want to see what’s hiding inside the message.

Play with words that tell the recipient a specific action to take, while describing its benefits, emotions and feelings.

Here are some engaging examples to play with during your Christmas promotions:

Make a dream come true. Embark on the quest for the perfect gift.Invite warmth into your hearts. The price is not the only value of the gift.

Next, let’s upgrade the call-to-action (CTA) elements. Red and green buttons work, that’s true, but what does the text read? Shouldn’t they be different from a standard email CTA such as “Buy now” or “Read more”? Of course they should!

Instead of standard CTA text, try using one of these:

Request it from SantaJoin the hunt NOW!Put it on the list

As always, it helps to give in advance in order to get a desired effect. The same rule holds true in Christmas marketing.

From all of the emails in the Christmas inbox machine, subscribers select only those that promise something more than product information and great prices.

Free delivery, additional discounts for the first buyers, and bundle offers — these are great to play with on this field, to get more attention and excitement from your recipients.

Remember that Christmas isn’t just a time to sell; it’s a time to build and strengthen relationships. Show them you care, and they’ll show their appreciation, not only with their purchase but with their good opinion and loyal behavior in the following year.

OK, so you’ve got the engaging content, great benefits to grab your recipients. So it’s time to send!

3 . . .  2 . . .  1 . . .

Whoa, hold your horses! Despite what you may think, your email isn’t complete yet. What’s more, it’s not time to start the Christmas email race.

Some marketers start their Holiday rush even 3 to 6 months before Christmas.

Isn’t that crazy!? OK, so what’s the best time to send holiday offers?

Most retailers click the send-button 2 to 4 weeks before Christmas. That certainly is a time when there is the most inbox traffic. If you’ve properly prepared the content and packaging of your email, you don’t have to be afraid that the recipient won’t see it.

However, the best time for sending and getting the most revenue from your emails is 1 to 2 weeks in advance. That way, you’ll be able to deliver every order, avoiding stressful deadlines, and your email will also avoid the main holiday inbox traffic.

Statistics show that 59% of retailers send their emails 2 to 4 weeks before holidays, and another 21% send them only a week before.

So take your time. Make sure you have everything in place, the designs are great, and the content is relevant. There’s no room for error; you simply may not have another chance to speak to your subscribers a second time.

Yeah… about the designs and relevant content — stay tuned for future issues of this blog series to get more inside tips on how to prepare your holiday emails.

Coming up next . . . how to package your “Christmas gift” — the rules of Christmas email design.

10 Questions to Ask Before Choosing an Email Marketing Company

Almost daily I’m engaged via any number of channels by people given the lead to choose a new Email Service Provider. Sometimes they are seeking an ESP for a company which has never been involved in email marketing and sometimes they are considering a move from one to another. The best place to start is with the right questions for both internal stake holders and the companies you are considering as your partner. Here are 10 good questions to ask.

Often the folks doing the scouting are looking for metrics which will make that choice simple. It’s understandable, but in reality there are no magic metrics; only good questions and honest answers.

This seems like an obvious question/answer, but just taking time to ask it shows you’re thinking and makes others in your organization think too! If you’re being asked to take point on this kind of task, you have duty to ask questions

Do you need to have advanced social marketing integration and analytics such as GetResponse offers? Does the company you are considering make it easy to integrate multiple channels for subscriber acquisition and content marketing/sharing?

Will you be designing your own newsletters and handling the graphics and such moving forward? If you don’t have this talent then you’ll be pleased to know that GetResponse (for example) has hundreds of readymade templates, thousands of free iStock photos and an intuitive drag and drop editor and even a soon-to-be-launched automatic landing page generator, which makes it easy for just about anyone to create a great looking newsletter and an effective landing page to drive them to in a snap! We can even design a fantastic template for your company for a small fee!

What’s your learning curve going to be like? Have you got someone on staff that won’t need any training of heavy support to put your newsletters together? If you don’t have someone like this, then coming back to the “powers that be” with a brilliantly easy to use intuitive, web based email marketing tool is crucial if you want to manage those expectations and look amazing to your bosses.

Who’s going to own this? What department head’s desk will this buck stop on? Who signs off before the newsletter goes out? This may be the most critical expectation to manage. If you don’t lay this out right from the start, every armchair chef in the place will want to dip their spoons in the soup and that’s a recipe for disaster. Create a procedure with strict deadlines and barring special circumstances, stick to it!

Generating and managing content is like bringing a new puppy home – at first everyone wants to feed it, but then the newness wears off and one unlucky person gets stuck with all the care and feeding! Decide right away what you are going to talk about and where you’ll get engaging content to talk about.

Frontline support, sales and especially your customers are the best source for content. Find out what your customers are asking about and answer those questions.

Call the support line and ask some questions. I suggest you create a few questions and use the same ones for each perspective email marketing company. Are you happy with the attitude and the answers? Does the prospective service offer support via multiple non-traditional channels such as Twitter and Facebook?

If you have a list you’ll need to import it and you’ll need to decide if you want the email marketing company to send out confirmation emails to confirm the list is valid or ask them to waive that process. This question comes up a lot and I always tell people that moving a list to GetResponse is not as painful as they may think so long as you have a solid permission-based email list.

I think we have one of the more streamlined and least painful processes in the market. We can help you move your list and you won’t have to pack or carry too much of a load.

Do they have features which impress you as cutting edge?  Do they have a drag and drop email creator? Are they bringing out more social integration features and are they developing aggressively for smartphones? Most importantly, does that development appear to follow a strategy which fits with your vision?

To optimize your criteria and manage expectations, ask each person involved in the decision process to submit a couple of examples of newsletters which really wow them and provide reasons why. This is going to help you get inside their heads and gain better insight. Challenge those involved to clearly communicate what they want now to avoid sudden surprises later.

Those are the basic ten starter questions which should help you better manage expectations. Remember, you aren’t just asking these questions solely of the companies you are considering for help with your email marketing! You want to make sure you have answers first from the stakeholders in your organization! All stakeholders need to know what is expected of them before committing.

So, share! What questions would you add?

Useful Techniques To Apply To Your Next Email Marketing Campaign

Make use of the reliable power of email marketing by taking a look at the following tips!

Construct your email so that it sounds personal. As is the case with any type of marketing effort, a customer is more likely to engage in a business transaction with you once you establish a personal relationship. For example, if you know why they signed up to get emails from you, include that reason in your email.

You can use A/B testing to improve the results of your emails’ subject lines. Take one of your emails, and divide the mailing list in two. Send each half of the list the same mail, but with differing subject lines. This lets you know which subject lines are successful and which need some work.

Stick to one subject per message and don’t meander. You don’t want your consumers to be overwhelmed or bored by the content in your email. Determine the one message that you need to get across in the email and focus on that idea. This will attract more readers which will translate to more customers. People like things to be simple.

Ensure that your emails have a lot of solid content. Include information that is helpful in your emails. You should never include simply selling information. Provide your subscribers with special articles that they might not can locate on your site. Make sure to add special offers and discounts for your products and services. Send special deals and holiday greetings, and remember to not only email when you desire something of your customers.

You want to make certain your emails are rich in content by putting in helpful information and not just making it into a sale’s pitch. Provide your subscribers with special articles that they might not can locate on your site. Make sure to add special offers and discounts for your products and services. Build rapport with your customers by sending holiday emails or birthday emails, not just emails at times you want business.

In order to ensure that every single customer on your list has given their permission for you to email them, you should have customers opt-in to your list twice before you send the first email. That may appear to be a large amount of effort, but you are guaranteed that the person really wants your emails, which erases the chance that you and your ISP will run into trouble.

Don’t use a lot of graphics in the emails that you send. Because so many popular email clients block graphics, including ads and logos, your audience probably will not be able to view emails that contain lots of pictures or other graphics. If your email contains graphics, it is also much more likely that it will be sent to a junk folder instead of to a potential customer’s inbox.

Use pre-header material to enhance the preview of your emails. A preheader is basically just the first line of text from the email body highlighted at the top. Most email companies show the preheader directly after the subject line and it can be used as a real attention grabber.

Provide your customers with an incentive in your emails. Subscribers will be more likely to execute a particular action if they feel as though there is something in it for them.
